EtherPad FAQ
serial ethernet device servers
I cannot ping my EtherPAD
Make sure the LNK LED is lit on the EtherPAD front panel. If not, check the Ethernet cable connection and the Hub. Replace the cable if needed.
Another cause of this problem is that the PC ARP cache has not been cleared. Often, when replacing or testing an EtherPAD, the same IP address will be used for all the different units.
Typically the first unit tested will respond to the ping but the rest will not reply. If you reset the ARP table of the PC sending the pings, the problem will be solved.
If your PC is not on the same Local subnet as the EtherPAD, and you have no Gateways configured on your PC or on the EtherPAD, you will not be able to ping the unit.

How fast should my EtherPAD reply to a Ping?
The EtherPAD will typically reply to a ping within 3-4ms.

I cannot configure my EtherPAD using a serial configuration cable
The EtherPAD serial configuration port is wired to pins 2 and 3 of the DB-9 configuration connector, which is located between the IBM power connector and the RJ45 Ethernet connector. A crossed cable is required with the following configuration.

E88 serial configuration cable

I cannot configure my EtherPAD using a HyperTerminal session
The version of HyperTerminal supported by some older operating systems often connects to the EtherPAD but will not allow keyboard entries. You can try and solve this problem by rebooting your PC or else install the upgraded version of HyperTerminal available at www.hilgraeve.com for download.
The terminal settings for the EtherPAD product range are 19200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, No parity and No flow control.

I cannot configure my EtherPAD using the windows configuration utility
Usually this happens when the EtherPAD was previously configured with an IP address or subnet mask out of the range of the local subnet of the PC from which you are attempting configuration. The EtherPAD IP address and Subnet mask will have to be reconfigured. This utility will only work if the PC and EtherPAD are on the same local subnet.

I cannot configure my EtherPAD using a Telnet session
EtherPAD SNMP
The cause of this problem is often the incorrect Telnet port. The EtherPAD Telnet configuration port is 21.

I have configured my EtherPAD with an IP address but it does not work. What have I done wrong?
Once the EtherPAD has been configured with an IP address and subnet mask, you need to set the parameters of the serial port. Once the serial side of the connection has been configured you need to configure a Network Application. This Application defines the port number that the application resident on a remote PC will connect to. Data received on this port by the EtherPAD will be sent out on the serial interface to the serial device. Refer to the Product Manual for more detail.

I have set up a UDP EtherPAD but cannot telnet to the Local Port to test the unit. What am I doing wrong?
Telnet does not support the UDP protocol. Use the SAN People TestPAD utility to test UDP applications.

Can I use a DHCP server to configure my EtherPAD?
All versions of EtherPAD can be configured using a DHCP Server. To use this option, do not configure the EtherPAD with an IP address or Subnet Mask. (Leave the entries blank)

I cannot connect to my EtherPAD from my application PC
This usually happens when connections are being attempted from a PC on a different subnet to that of the EtherPAD. You need to configure the EtherPAD and PC with suitable Gateway IP addresses. Also make sure that the PC is attempting to connect to the configured Local TCP Port. Confirm the Connection Options (Active or Passive) as well as the Remote IP address and TCP Port. If the remote IP address, and/or port, has been configured, the EtherPAD will only accept connections (passive), or make connections to (active), that IP address and/or port.
