Enermax Setup
serial to ethernet device server - Strike Technologies Enermax
Scenario
Connect to the Enermax meter via the EtherPAD. A COM port Redirector (SerialIP from Tactical Software) was used to provide a transparent serial link over Ethernet to the EtherPAD.

Enermax Setup

In this example the E-Man L-U V2.03 was used to interface with the Enermax meter.
Take Note: The Dos Software can only run at 2400 baud and will automatically set the meter to 2400 when programmed by Dos Software.

EtherPAD Setup

Configure the EtherPAD to reflect similar settings as those parameters configured on the Enermax application.
Use EtherPAD Explorer to find your EtherPAD if the IP is unknown. Click [Web Configuration] to launch the web browser. Log in as root, with xxx being the default password.

EtherPAD Explorer

Configure your Serial Port parameters by selecting [Serial Application]. [Change Serial Parameters] to define the Serial Port values.

Change Serial Parameters

Add a TCP Application once you have 'changed' the values. Make the application Passive to allow incoming connections on port 5000 in this case. Set the Application Protocol to 'Redirector' to comply with RFC2217 (telnet redirector).

Add TCP Application

[Save/Reboot] with the new settings.

Serial IP Setup

Configure Serial/IP to reflect similar settings as those parameters configured on the EtherPAD. Take note of the EtherPAD's IP Address and the TCP Application's port number. Set the Connection Protocol to Telnet.

Serial IP Configuration

You can monitor the activity on the Virtual COM Port by selecting [Port Monitor]. [Enable Trace] to enable diagnostics.

E-MAN L-U V2.03 SETUP

Configure the [Communication Settings] to reflect the parameters set in Serial IP. Take note of the Virtual COM Port used and the Serial Port parameters set on the EtherPAD. Two options for connecting the Enermax are available (Serial cable or via Optical Transceiver). Some versions may not have both.

System -> Communication Settings

Optical Head Configuration

Direct Cable Configuration

[Retrieve Meter Setup] to get the Enermax meter details.

Meter Communications -> Retrieve Meter Setup

NOTE: Communication was unsuccessful at 9600 baud using the "Direct to Computer RS232/485" connection setting. Set the "Logon baud rate" to "2400".

The Enermax meter authenticates at 300 baud rate (optical head), and thereafter adjusts to the parameter set in the Communications Setup (Optimal being 9600). With the Telnet Redirector (RFC2217) enabled, the EtherPAD will automatically adjust its baud rate to that of the data being sent.

Authenticating

Once Authentication passes, the configuration on the Enermax meter is downloaded to the PC.

Downloading Meter Setup

You will be able to observe the data being passed via the Serial Ports on your COM Port Redirector Port Monitor.
