MONITOR SUB STATIONS REMOTELY
Dial in Server in Electrical Distribution Sub Station Environment

The EtherPAD Duo is an extremely versatile device. Aside from simply connecting a serial device to Ethernet, there are a number of other useful applications for the product. One popular application for the EtherPAD Duo is for use as a Dial-in Server. In this application, the EtherPAD Duo is used to host a PPP connection from a remote PC. This has been used successfully in the Power Distribution industry by technicians to make a dial-in connection to a network within a remote substation. This allows technicians to remotely monitor protection relays, using the legacy serial software, which is loaded on their PC at their workshop, and virtual com port software to connect to the remote protection relays over the dial up connection.

Both serial ports on the EtherPAD Duo support full modem control. Since the Duo also supports PPP and IP forwarding, one can use a PSTN or GSM modem with the Duo to set up a PPP connection between two networks.

Where sub stations are located in remote areas, this system offers significant cost savings by allowing technicians to diagnose and adjust settings on protection relays without having to drive to site.

In many remote sub-stations, the facility management companies already maintain a PSTN communication line to the sub station, and this can now be utilised for remote monitoring.
