This demonstration demonstrates how the Etherpad can be used with a serial device and its existing set-up and diagnostic
software in what is known as a serial port re-director application. In this demonstration, Ethernet connectivity is used
to extend the distance of the serial connection that would normally be used. Typically, engineers are required to take
their laptop to the device to get access to the serial port. (RS232 is limited to 15m). In this application, one uses
an existing LAN and the existing proprietary software to access the instrument.
At our exhibition, we were supplied with an ABB Vision Polyphase meter. The optional RS232 plug-in module was fitted to
the meter, and it was connected to the serial port of the Etherpad. ABB Metering's "Power Master", remote
visualization software, was loaded on one of the notebooks at the exhibition. Since the connection between this software
and the Etherpad was to be Ethernet, and the software did not allow for an Ethernet connection, we used Tactical software's
COM/IP to create a virtual serial port on the notebook. This "virtual serial port" allows the application to
see an imaginary serial port, and the communication is re-directed through the PC's Ethernet adapter to the IP address of
the Etherpad.
