Marine & Coastal Management
Learn how Marine and Coastal Management are utilizing SAN People products to Ethernet enable a research vessel...

Marine and Coastal Management provides for responsible custodianship of South Africa's marine and coastal resources and ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations of South Africans. Part of this function is achieved with ocean going vessels with sophisticated monitoring equipment. These instruments have provided important information on the currents that transport fish eggs and larvae from the spawning areas on the Agulhas Bank to the nursery areas of the West Coast. On board ship is a CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) unit, which is lowered through the water column to record temperature and salinity, coupled to a 12-bottle rosette sampler. Each bottle can be individually triggered to close at any depth down to 5 000 m, collecting samples that are used for chemical and biological analysis.

In the past all electronic equipment has been attached to the central computer through a complex network of cables. The vessel has been refurbished with an Ethernet network for the following reasons.

1) To substitute a communication cable from reach piece of equipment to only one network cable
2) When adding new equipment, not having to run a new communications cable but just attaching the instrument to the network.
3) Doing away with complex serial tailor made hubs to an off the shelf standard.
4) The speed of the network running at 10 Mbps.
5) Being able to tap a computer in at any point in the network and being able to access all the necessary equipment.
